Tips for a better 2007

2006 has gone - what an interesting year! Welcome to 2007! Here at Ambience we have the feeling that 2007 is going to be a fantastic year. We love seeing more and more people come into the clinic in need of help and care, and sending them away well and happy.

We are sure that 2007 is going to be a great year for you too. You are going to make that change that makes your life just that little bit better.

We don't like the idea that every year people make up resolutions that are really hard to keep, and end up unhappy because of this. If you have made a resolution like stopping smoking, losing weight, overcoming a phobia or habit or just generally getting a bit more healthy, well done and we will do our very best to help. For more details click here.

We also quite practically think that if you just do more things that are going to make you happy you will remove the problem (unhappiness) and the symptoms of that problem (spending time and money on drink, cigarettes, overeating etc).

So we have come up with a little list of things that if you give it a fair try will hopefully make your journey through 2007 a little bit better.

1. Do one thing you've always wanted to do

We all have one thing that we've always wanted to do but for one reason and another we have let life get in the way. It could be one place you've always wanted to visit or a new hobby like belly dancing you've always wanted to try - you will know what it is. (We hope it is legal!) This year - make sure you do it. Once you've done it, whether you love it or hate it the sense of satisfaction you will get will be immense.

2. Be optimistic

The trend for cynicism is on the rise. However people who see the glass as half full, rather than half empty really do eliminate a lot of stress from their lives. They life longer, happier, healthier, more productive lives. Try it - it works!

3. Save the planet - one step at a time

Instead of beating yourself up about how you would like to go green, and thinking of it as a massive task - just change one thing. Make a resolution to do one thing this year that will impact on the environment. Start recycling, or drive your car less, ride your bike more, or holiday in the U.K. Once you start doing one thing regularly you will be amazed at how easily it becomes a habit, and it will inspire you to greater things.

4. Get better at something you're already good at

Make a list of all the things that you like doing and that your good at, and resolve to do one thing better. Immerse yourself in this thing for a little bit. Learn more about it. Then do it better. It can be work or play related, and it should make you feel even more great about yourself.

5. Do a good deed

This sounds easy, and it is. But there's a catch. Do someone a good turn, but don't get found out, and don't tell anyone you've done it. You'll feel so good about yourself, you'll find yourself doing it more and more often.

6. Get in touch

It could be with someone who lives far away that you haven't seen in a while, or with someone who was special to you but for whatever reason you have lost contact with them. Just do it - email, write a letter, call them, leave it open ended so they can get back in touch with you if they want. If this person meant something to you, your relationship deserves a little effort.

7. Try not watching T.V.

This is a difficult one, I know. Most of us love our T.V. It's like another member of the family. But trust me, if you don't look at it for a bit, it won't sulk, or run up to it's room and slam the door. Just one evening a week, read a book or play a board game, go out for a walk or do that hobby you've always wanted to do but never got round to. You'll be suprised at the things you can do and the things you learn when your not watching t.v. You will feel better, we promise.

8. Be nice to yourself

Do one thing that's just for you, and I don't mean buying yourself a new pair of shoes! So many of us spend time and money buying ourselves material possessions to make ourselves feel better, and not dealing with what's on the inside. Deal with your health issues, indulge in a little pampering. You really do deserve it.

If your year was anything like ours last year, some of it was great, some of it was a bit scary and mostly we were very busy and just trying to make sense of a lot of things.

Alison and Rue would like to say thank you to all the amazing therapists, friends and family who helped them out so much last year.

We are looking forward to 2007 and helping more and more people on their path to health and happiness.
