Chiropractic
treatment
All
body functions depend on the electrical transmission the nerves
to coordinate all organs and systems in our bodies. Since an
individuals health is either directly or indirectly controlled
by the nervous system, interference to the function of this
system impairs normal function and lower resistance to disease.
A
chiropractor is concerned with the relationship between the
structure (primarily the spine) and the function (primarily
coordinated by the nervous system) of the human body, and how
this relationship affects the restoration and preservation of
health. Chiropractic is based on the fact that the human body
is a self-healing, self-regulating organism and the nervous
system coordinates this process.
Many
ailments can be traced back to problems with the spinal column,
spinal cord and/or nerve roots. Chiropractic looks beyond symptoms
and treats the root causes of problems.
Central
to the Chiropractic treatment approach is the adjustment (sometimes
called manipulation) of spinal joints and/or the pelvis. Adjustment
of these joints aims to remove nerve interference and restore
healthy functioning. All ages from new born babies, pregnant
women to the aging population can be adjusted and the treatment
is modified to the individual patient.
The
majority of adults begin chiropractic care because of a pain
complaint. Common problems that can respond well to chiropractic
include low back and neck pain, pain between the shoulder blades,
headaches/migraine, carpal tunnel syndrome/repetitive strain
injuries, sports injuries or numbness or tingling in the hands/feet.
Childhood complaints such as colic, ear infections, developmental
problems, asthma and concentration problems can also respond
well. Most people stay under chiropractic care because their
symptoms decrease and they have an enhanced feeling of well
being.
The
initial consultation will include a combination of chiropractic,
neurological and orthopaedic tests to assess if chiropractic
care is appropriate. Sometimes an x-ray will also be taken.
Chiropractors work closely with other healthcare professionals
and if chiropractic is not appropriate or other interventions
are thought necessary you will be referred to the relevant practitioner.
