Eating Disorders

Anorexia nervosa - This is a complicated disorder characterised by among other things, a refusal to maintain body weight, feelings of self loathing and a lack of self perception (being unable to see yourself as you really are).

Our therapists have helped sufferers by looking at their patterns of behaviour, and what triggers those patterns. Working on self image, helping you be able to see the "real you" and building self esteem can help you gradually become comfortable with who you are. This can lead to you making realistic decisions about your life and having a life outside of food. There are no judgements, all the therapists ask for is that you be honest so you can work together to improve your quality of life.

Activity anorexia - This is said to occur in 75% of people who suffer from anorexia nervosa. The sufferer values exercise more than they value food. Food intake declines and physical activity increases. Treatment is similar to the treatment of anorexia nervosa.

Bulimia - This is a pyschological eating disorder. It is characterised by binging - eating followed by innapropriate methods of weight control, including purging, vomiting, fasting etc. This behaviour can be down to a number of reasons such as depression, stress and self esteem. Sufferers get locked into this cycle of feeling a rush while bingeing and self loathing and guilt after purging. If there is no current treatment in place we will need a referral from your GP. If you are currently undergoing treatment we will need a direct referral from your psychiatrist.

Hypnotherapy and NLP are used to to work on your self esteem, your own image of yourself and what triggers this condition. This can help end the cycle. Time Line Therapy has also been used very successfully in the past. Our therapists have helped many people with this disorder with great results.

Compulsive overeating is a serious condition that needs professional support. It means eating even when you are not hungry. This may be all the time or come in cycles. People who overeat are often overweight and shield themselves behind their appearance. They often feel great shame about overeating. This can be due to very low self esteem and lack of self confidence.

Hypnotherapy/NLP works on the issue of self esteem and breaking the patterns of behaviour. Giving you the self confidence to be who you want to be.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a serious disorder. People that suffer from BDD not only dislike some aspect of how they look, they're preoccupied severely with it. Most get to the point where they are unable to function properly. The self degrading thoughts about their flaw/s soon take over take the person's mind and it is all he/she can think about. The problem, though, is that all of these self-degrading thoughts about a perceived flaw are distorted. Many, many times the supposed flaw doesn't even exist, or an "imperfect" body part is blown entirely out of proportion. Low self-esteem is a trademark of those with BDD as they feel like colossal failures for their perceived physical flaws.

Hypnotherapy/NLP can help by dealing with the self esteem issue initially, Then dealing with the other issues that will unfold, the patterns of behaviour and what triggers those patterns. Our therapists have helped people with this serious disorder with amazing results.
